Our grants

How it works

Overview   |    How it works    |    Apply

Year after year, we have granted funds to the partners and programs that underpin the health and vibrancy of our community. However, we recognize that our networks have their limits and new and unforeseen challenges and/or opportunities have yet to be discovered. We welcome inquiries and applications from those who believe their work aligns with our impact areas and wish to introduce themselves to us.

Explore various options for accessing funding:

Apply

The simplest way for new or minimally funded grantees to access funding is to apply through the appropriate channel.

Build on existing partnerships

We value long-term collaboration with those who share our aspirations and have demonstrated impact. Many of our grants provide support over multiple years, and we do not set term limits for our grantees.

Proposals invited by portfolio managers

Our portfolio managers spend much of their time engaging with grantees, community leaders, experts and community members who have valuable perspectives related to community needs. These conversations may lead to invitations to submit a grant proposal.

Who we fund

Potential grantees must*:

  • Be a public charity with an IRS letter of Determination, have arranged for a fiscal agent, or be a synagogue or other religious organization that is a currently operating house of worship in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Be located within  our catchment area (either the organization itself or the program specifically)
  • Enhance the well-being and vibrancy of the Jewish community

*Individual and group grants requirements vary.

CJP makes both annual and multi-year grants. Grant decisions are driven by CJP staff and reviewed as appropriate with volunteers, including CJP’s Board of Directors, which reviews and approves all grant funding on an annual basis. CJP staff typically use the following criteria when making grant decisions**:

  • Strategic alignment: Is this organization and/or funding opportunity aligned with CJP’s impact areas and/or Strategic Investment Priorities?
  • Impact: Is the organization able to provide evidence of impact and their capacity to collect meaningful data on learnings and outcomes?
  • Organizational health: What is the strength of the organization’s finances, leadership, and governance?

**Grants for individuals and groups are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Generally, we seek to support grantees in building diverse revenue streams, with CJP funding not exceeding 20% of a grantee’s organizational budget (exceptions are made for time-bound, strategic investments).

We also provide funding to a small set of international partners in support of our Israel and Global Jewry agenda.

Funding is not available for the following:

  • Requests for capital projects
  • Requests for endowments
  • Requests for scholarships
